Discovery III

Begin your journey in Fairbanks, Alaska where we will be staying at one of the Princess Wilderness Lodges for TWO nights. On Sunday we will take Riverboat Discovery Cruise & Gold Dredge 8 Combo Tour. We will Board the only remaining authentic Alaskan sternwheeler for a cruise along the Chena and Tanana rivers in Chena River State Recreation Area This modern-day riverboat features an open sun deck and heated glass enclosed decks You will witness the "wedding of the rivers." The marriage of these two mighty rivers creates quite a unique line when the clear waters of the Chena meet the Tanana, the world’s greatest glacier river carrying tons of glacial silt from the Alaska Range.

Your next adventure will be a visit to the home of Dave Monson and Susan Butcher, the late four-time Iditarod champion. Here, you will meet their winning sled dogs and witness a dog sled demonstration. From there, continue on to the Old Chena Indian Village and disembark for a glimpse into Alaskan Native life and history. Alaskan Native guides will take you on a tour of an Athabascan Indian village. Next, board a train to visit the Gold Dredge 8, a National Historic Monument! Local miners will give a brief but informative course in mining, then you will try panning for yourself! You will find gold - we guarantee it! Nothing beats the thrill of grabbing a sack filled with pay dirt and getting your chance to strike it rich. Finally, explore the dredge camp and visit the gift shop where you can have your gold weighed and find out the dollar value based on the current market price. Have your gold turned into a memorable keepsake before boarding the train for the return back to the station.

Approximately 7¾ - 8¼ hours – so this is a full day adventure to see Alaska like no other!

The Island Princess is a 92,000 ton ship that will hold 2,214 passengers. 90% of the rooms are over views with 700 balconies. Our ship leaves Anchorage (Whittier) and heads south. Enjoy scenic sailing as we begin our journey through Hubbard Glacier, the largest tidewater glacier in North America, Hubbard Glacier measures 76 miles long and plunges 1,200 feet into the depths of the bay. Its immense beauty and phenomenal blue hues are enchanting, even from afar. But it's when your cruise ship draws closer that its towering surface really impresses, dwarfing even the uppermost deck on your ship at a whopping 40 stories high. There, with the snowcapped mountains serving as a glorious backdrop, you'll have a prime viewing spot from which to witness the glacier calving, as it often expels icebergs the size of 10-story buildings-imagine the splash!

The area around Hubbard Glacier is also renowned for its wildlife, where whales, harbor seals and otters swim, brown bears, moose and black-tailed deer roam ashore, and a wide variety of seabirds soar gracefully across the sky.

Glacier Bay National Park

Next is Glacier Bay National Park. Princess is one of a select few cruise lines permitted to cruise the pristine waters of Glacier Bay, the highlight of our 7-day Voyage of the Glaciers cruise. Just west of Juneau, this breathtaking national park and preserve boasts some of the world's most spectacular tidewater glaciers, such as Margerie Glacier, which often drops colossal chunks of ice into the sea. Not surprisingly, Glacier Bay National Park and its epic ice giants are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising Alaska's magnificent park system.

During your scenic cruise, friendly Park Rangers will join the ship to share their knowledge of this amazing place and host a fun Junior Ranger program for kids. They may even be able to help you identify Glacier Bay's abundant wildlife, including humpback whales, sea otters, porpoises, harbor seals, black bears, mountain goats, bald eagles and large colonies of seabirds.

Ketchikan, Alaska
Ketchikan, Alaska

Our first port of call is Skagway. Skagway was the gateway to the gold fields for the thousands who flocked to Alaska and the Yukon with the hope of striking it rich. Relive the route the miners took by taking a ride on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad. While in Skagway you can see the area by signing up for a hiking and float tour, a flight seeing tour or many others tours that are available.

Next stop is Juneau, Alaska’s Capital. This is the only U.S. capital that is NOT accessible by roads. Here is where you will be able to see Mendenhall Glacier. This amazing glacier is 12 miles long, a half-mile wide and from 300 to 1,800 feet deep. stretching from the Juneau Icefield to Mendenhall Lake, it has been slowly retreating since the mid 1700s. How about Glacier Flightseeing or signing up for a Whale Watching Tour! You're virtually ensured a whale sighting from April to November when hundreds of humpbacks feed and frolic in the waters of the northern Inside Passage. Orcas are also common sightings in Juneau.

Last stop... Ketchikan... Visitors to Ketchikan will be intrigued by its rich Native heritage, which includes the world's oldest collection of totem poles at Totem Heritage Center. The Haida, Tlingit and Tsimshian are all a part of the city's colorful history. Ketchikan, with its abundance of salmon, is also a sportfishing paradise. Sightseers will be impressed with both the scenic town and its surroundings, especially Misty Fjords National Monument.
