Big Sky boasts 400 inches of snowfall each year, it has 3500 skiable acres with 80 miles of named runs and a vertical drop of 4350 feet. Big Sky has a terrain park on one mountain, a half-pipe on the other. The slopes have a wide range of difficulty suitable for the entire family.

Skiing & Snowboarding

Big Sky offers instant access some of the most diverse skiing and snowboarding amongst breathtaking vistas in the lower 48. Float down a 2,000 vertical foot, powder filled bowl beneath Lone Peak; Bob and weave through the Bavarian Forest; Ride the Lone Peak Tram for a bird's eye view of untamed wilderness. You'll find almost twice as many acres as skiers. Out here, we like our elbow room.

The Terrain Park facilities bring you world class challenges no matter what your skill level. . The Swifty and Pony Park are for people just getting their feet under them.

Tubing & FAMILY FUN ZONE

After the slopes close, the lights come on and the Family Fun Zone springs to life. Located just up the slope from Snowcrest Lodge & Village Center, the Family Fun Zone features a 500-foot long tube park along "Adrian's Way" carpet lift. New this season is a small terrain park with boxes, rails and kickers. Kids of all ages can practice tricks on their boards or skis under the lights in "the zone."

Lone Peak Tram

The Lone Peak Tram is proud to transport skiers and riders for the 12th season. The story of its inception is one of labor and love. Before The Tram, Big Sky Resort was known for its intermediate terrain and light lift lines. But a hankering for the extreme among Big Sky's core riders fueled management's decision to shun industry critics and install a tram to the summit which would expand the resort's overall size by 50%. This furthered Big Sky's skiable terrain by over 1,200 acres and increased the vertical to 4,350 feet, placing it among the top three ski resorts in North America. Construction didn't happen without its share of logistical concerns, though. The Tram was built with the aid of 3,000 helicopter flights and hundreds of specialized high-altitude workers. Even heavy construction equipment had to be torn apart and reassembled at the summit. Today, The Tram continues to transport technical skiers and riders to some of the most difficult terrain in the country while welcoming the less advanced skiers and sightseers to 360 degree views of three states, two national parks and dozens of peaks.

Just the Facts

  • The inside of the cabins were originally painted pink to have a calming effect on the passengers.
  • A model of The Lone Peak Tram was blown up in Warren Miller's 1996 film Snowriders.
  • Construction began on June 4, 1995 and The Tram was opened to the public on December 23, 1995.
  • The Tram has played a key role in several marriage proposals and wedding ceremonies.
  • The ride alone is worth it for the scenery with 360 degree views of 3 States and surrounding mountain ranges, including the Tetons on a clear day.
  • The Tram may be enjoyed by intermediates who can navigate the groomed blue runs from the top of the Lone Peak triple chair on down to Tram
  • boarding area, then ride the Tram round trip.
  • The Lone Peak Tram is a Doppelmayr lift built by Matrix construction from Alaska, a firm specializing in high altitude and arctic conditions. It travels 1,450 vertical feet over a distance of 2,828 feet with two cabins alternating directions.
  • In 2007 both Tram cars received a make-over including new windows, the installation of a more durable and protective lining as well as new artwork on the exterior.
